I’ve optimised hundreds of WordPress sites. Almost every “my site is slow” complaint comes down to the same five things. Here’s the 5-minute diagnosis I run before I touch anything.
1. Run GTmetrix, look at TTFB first, not the score
If your Time To First Byte is over 600ms, your hosting is the problem, not your plugins. No amount of caching plugins will fix a slow server.
2. Count your active plugins
Over 20? At least five of them are doing nothing but loading scripts on every page. Audit them ruthlessly.
3. Check your images
One unoptimised hero image can weigh more than your entire theme. Convert to WebP, set proper dimensions and lazy-load everything below the fold.
4. Look at your homepage requests
Over 80 HTTP requests is death by a thousand cuts, fonts, icon packs, sliders, tracking scripts. Combine, defer or remove.
5. Test without your page-builder add-ons
Elementor isn’t slow. The six add-on packs you installed are.
A fast, boring website outperforms a slow, beautiful one. Every time.
Save this for your next project, and if you want the full toolkit I use, it’s free on this site.
